Pinterest for Job Seekers NOT SO FAST!

Pinterest for Job Seekers NOT SO FAST! Isnt it funny that when something new comes along, one of our natural reactions is that we need to jump on it, or feel were left behind? Pinterest is that something new, and many job seekers think we need to jump on it. I dont. Check out this post from Jacob Share, at Job Mob, where he asks career professionals what they advise regarding Pinterest. My advice was: Jason Alba,  JibberJobber: LOL I tell job seekers to stay away from Pinterest… for now. Unless you are in certain industries or professions, it’s a waste of time. Many of the others had ideas on how to use it, but seriously, folks, I think there is plenty to worry about without trying to figure out if you need to be on Pinterest for a job search, with VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS. Most interesting to me (aside from what some people advice on that post) is the comment by Peggy, a recruiter/coach, who says Stay off Pinterest in the first comment and all of the supporting commentors. What do you think?  Is Pinterest a place for you to do your job search? If you want an analogy, heres one.  Lets say you are working on your car and you need to buy a part for the engine.  Would you to the craft store to buy that part? Thats why I tell job seekers to not waste their time there. Thoughts? Pinterest for Job Seekers NOT SO FAST! On the Job by Anita Bruzzese One Thing You Must Do With Any Resume

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese One Thing You Must Do With Any Resume Fashion experts often advise that any outfit will look much better if you have it tailored and that advice holds true for resumes as well. When youbuild a resume, know that a tailored one is going to be one that fits the needs of a particular employer. Tailoring your resume makes you look much more desirable as a job candidate. Also: tailoring a resume to each and every job you apply to is an absolute must. Unsure of how to tailor a resume for a specific job? Look at the specific requirements of the job ad and try to address those points directly. Alsomimic the language used in the job ad when writing your resume. Continue reading for additional must-know info on this topic. When considering how to tailor a resume for a specific job, toss out the rehash of job duties and responsibilities that might be profiled in your existing resume. Try to think in more detail. For example, if you worked in human resources, did you work on specific software? Did you work with various departments to plot their hiring strategy, and then craft job descriptions? Listing nothing but your duties and responsibilities does nothing for your resume, nor does it do anything for the recruiter or hiring manager who will read it (besides bore them). You must prove that you delivered results in previous or current roles (more on this soon). Before we go much further, know this you likely wont have to write a new resumefrom scratchfor each employer. A lot of your resume will remain the same most likely, yourresume heading(which contains your contact information); youreducation section; and past employers and dates worked for past employers. The key to how to tailor a resume for a specific job is starting with a solid, well-written,

The Ultimate List of Tools For Pinterest Success (Podcast #74) - Classy Career Girl

The Ultimate List of Tools For Pinterest Success (Podcast #74) Todays episode is on one of my absolute favorite topics!! Pinterest! I used to write consistent content on my blog. I knew it was great content that needed to be read by a lot more people. It was such a bummer to write so much and spend so much time blogging but then not have many people read my content. I was also getting 10-20 email optins each day but I really wanted to grow my email list so that I could grow my business. Everything changed a year ago when I decided to focus all of my attention into Pinterest. I basically became a student of the platform. I spent hours each day working and studying Pinterest and really understanding what works and what doesn’t. The time I put in during 2016 really paid off because we have seen so much business growth this year.   It’s really pretty exciting. Lazy Job Search Preparation It Shows! Dont Sabotage Your Hard Work!

Lazy Job Search Preparation It Shows! Don’t Sabotage Your Hard Work! Lazy Job Search Preparation We can tell! You’re not fooling anybody! I know… we’ve heard all of the excuses in a job search:” I don’t have time; it’s just a phone interview; I’ll do the research when I get the interview; I know enough about them.” Jonathan found the perfect job posting at a local company that he really wants to sell for. They posted a brand new sales executive position, seeking someone with his skill set, but it’s in an industry he hasn’t sold for before. Oh, well. He was so excited, he clicked on the “Submit your résumé here” button and attached his latest résumé. Done! Now he waits. And waits. And waits. The very same day, Leslie saw the same job description. She didn’t have experience in that industry, either. And she was missing some other skills that were requested in the job description. So she sat down and wrote out a plan. Here is what she did: Step 1: Leslie studied the company, the industry, and its competitors. Step 2: Leslie found a LinkedIn Group for the company and saw a number of sales professionals having a dialogue there. She even asked a few questions to the group like, “Could any sales executives share his/her background to the group prior to working here?” On LinkedIn, Leslie also saw that a sales manager was a 2nd relationship from one of her contacts so she asked to be introduced. Step 3: Leslie completed a Cut the Crap (CTC) Job Description Profile (JD Profile) to compare her own skills and experiences to that of the job description. It was much clearer where her gaps were and where her strengths were. She then had a plan for how she was going to apply. Leslie took a few more steps to be sure her application had the highest likelihood of being looked at and selected for an interview. She knew that it was going to be challenging and competitive since other applicants probably will come from the company’s own industry. Step 4: She altered her résumé to be sure to use similar language. The hiring manager that wrote the job description is looking for “cold-calling” experience but Leslie’s résumé used the term “prospecting” so she made simple edits. Step 5: She refined the critical 1-pager that sits on top of her résumé: the JD Profile. It paints the exact picture a screener, recruiter or hiring manager needs to be able to answer, “Why should we consider this candidate for this specific job?” Leslie highlighted her strengths, quantified her years and depth of experience in key categories, and wrote “eager to learn” where she has gaps. Step 6: She wrote a great Cut the Crap (CTC) Cover Letter, too, drawing from her Step 5. She pulled out 3 of the most important categories where she is a fit and requested an interview at the end. Step 7: She stitched all three documents together her cover letter, Job Description Profile and Résumé into one Cut the Crap (CTC) Candidate Packet. Step 8: She proofed the entire packet 3 times prior to submitting. She pressed “enter.” Did you know that if you don’t apply expertly you won’t get the interview? Amazing how that works! Why are so many applications JUST résumés or JUST a résumé and a poorly-written, standardized cover letter? How will that inspire someone to call you and say, “Come on in for an interview?” Poor preparation is just laziness and being part of the herd mentality. Yes, the website says, “Post your résumé here.” It does not say “…and nothing else,” does it? C’mon, job seekers. Whether you are searching within your company or externally; whether you are employed or unemployed; do your BEST prior to applying for a role!
